Broker's Comments

This vessel is an excellently presented historic Dutch Gouda Tjalk currently moored in a peaceful location and looks great for cruising here, or on the continent. Alternatively she could be used as a houseboat with her current mooring possibly available by separate negotiation

She seems to have been well maintained and cared for by her current owners, who have now moved ashore. A recent survey was completed less than two years ago

A brief history as well as some owners comments are given below:

"Forty years ago three German friends saw a hulk and decided to engage a project that brought a once steadily working Dutch sailing barge back to a vibrant life, working in historic charters on the Baltic Sea and German inland waters. They rigged her as a ketch and installed a strong engine, a 120-horse power Daimler Benz, as an auxiliary to her sail power. One of the three friends was a physicist who worked out the basic plans for their almost thirty year restoration.

The ketch rig had three fore sails on an extended bowsprit and above her foremast a golly-wobbler was used in light airs. She also had a topsail for the mainsail. All of these sails are available and go with the sale of of the vessel

After we purchased her, we brought her to Suffolk through the Dutch Mast-Up Route and found her a dry and comfortable sailor though a bit slow with her 55 tons and bluff (providing the dryness) bows. But, she maintained a straight course probably due to the railroad tie as a keel beneath her hull. I might add that there is no noticeable heeling to a windward reach due to the 16’ beam on a 60’ hull. Wine glasses do not fall!"
